Kids in Australia are not active enough and the levels of childhood obesity are going up year-on-year. There are many reasons but one of the main ones is that technology has allowed our kids to be able to do many different things and so they are extremely reluctant to put down their devices and get themselves outside into the fresh air and the sunshine. It has led to many kids just enjoying their meals and then sitting down again in an armchair to play a game for the next couple of hours. This is not conducive to good physical or mental health.
As a parent, it is your job to make sure that your children are as healthy as possible and so you need to start enrolling them in sporting activities. There are many different sports to choose from like soccer, Australian rule’s football and a good use of their time would be to sign them up for some much-needed and beneficial basketball lessons. This is an excellent team sport that can teach them hand-to-eye coordination and allow them to make new friends.
The following are just some of the important reasons for taking part in sports for growing kids here in Australia.
- Great for their physical health – As was touched on briefly before, you need to get your kids out of the house so that they don’t experience any serious health conditions as they get older. The last thing that you want is for your child to have diabetes because this is a real life changer. By signing them up for basketball, you are doing a very responsible thing because this will get their hearts pumping, their blood flowing and it will improve their overall metabolism.
- Great for their mental health – Kids nowadays are under an incredible amount of pressure and not only do they have to deal with issues in real life but they have to deal with them online as well. Many kids are walking around with an extraordinarily high amount of stress and anxiety and this isn’t normal for young children. Getting them to take part in playing a sport and being part of a team gives them a sense of accomplishment and increases their confidence levels no end.
- Great for better social connections – If we let our kids remain indoors on their smartphones and other digital devices then they are going to end up being socially awkward and this is not conducive to a successful future as an adult. This is the perfect time for your children to be making new friends and meeting others who share the same interests that they do. They will learn about important things like teamwork, taking part in competitions and being a good sportsperson.
The icing on the cake is that as well as the above three benefits, your kids will do better in school as well. Many studies show that children who take part in sports are high achievers in school.
